Welcome to our Segway Ninebot ES4 review for 2023. The latest addition to their “ES” range, this model far outperforms its predecessors and offers a direct upgrade. Firstly, a little backstory; Segway were one of the first PEV manufacturer’s to enter the scene in 2003.
As such, they boast decades of experience and are a well established industry leader. Since being reacquired by Ninebot in 2015, their range has undergone a dramatic increase in production; since releasing a host of fun & functional models for all tastes.
We believe their kickscooter range offers an ideal selection of electric scooters for commuters, with room for differing needs & budgets. Honestly, we feel as though this model features a comprehensive design, offering great performance for its price as a mid-budget eScooter. Switching our 2023 Segway Ninebot ES4 review onto speed, power & distance. When we first saw the motor size, we had low expectations regarding performance. However, this model packs a deceptive 300W motor, with a max. output of 800W; in turn propelling it to speeds of up to 18.6 mp/h (29.9 km/h).
Alongside this, the motor also offers a terrific amount of torque, contributing to its decent hill climbing ability. As such, riders should expect to tackle inclines of up to 15 degrees with relatively no issues. Although, please note that variables such as rider weight, terrain, incline, etc. will impact overall performance.
Riders can further choose from three modes, each offer varying levels of speed & power. Take your time and go at your own pace with Speed Limit, take a cruise in Standard or spice it up in Sports mode. We were especially surprised with the great range produced from the Ninebot ES4, allowing for rides of up to 28 miles (45 km) off a single charge.
Compared to the rest, the ES4 claims an extra 10+ miles over its predecessors. Alongside this, you can effectively double, triple, quadruple (etc.) your range with replacement/spare batteries, thanks to the external removable battery discussed below.
How fast does it go?
18.6 mp/h (29.9 km/h), with three speed modes to choose from (speed limit, standard & sports).
What age/weight is it suitable for?
Segway state that this model remains most suitable for those ages 14+, weighing between 55-220 lbs (25-100 kg); with recommended heights between 3’11” – 6’6″.
What is the range/distance?
Maximum range of approx. 28 miles (45 km) per charge, with varying results depending on your route & riding mode. Furthermore, please note that variables such as rider weight, incline, terrain, etc. will impact overall performance.

Bringing our 2023 Segway Ninebot ES4 review onto our battery life and charging section. To begin, we feel as though Segway really pushed for something great here, integrating both internal and external Lithium-ion batteries containing a total capacity of 374 Wh. Not only does this effectively double mileage, it also allows riders to swap out their dead external battery with a fully charged spare.
Both batteries maintain an IP54 rating, protecting against moderate sustained water splashes and dust ingress. They also feature a smart Battery Management System (BMS), which protects against common faults such as over-heating, over-current, over-voltage and more.
As a result of these additional batteries, the ES4 claims an extra 10 miles range over its predecessors, accompanied by almost double the charge time of 7 hours. This mostly balances out though, due to the extended range, speed and swappable battery option.
We also feel as though its intended target audience of commuters will easily have time to charge in-between their shifts. Incorporating dual batteries is a really cool & functional design feature that we’d love to see more of in the future. How long does it take to charge?
Approx. 7 hours; longer than previous models, however the ES4 also offers over 10 miles more range.

Although boasting internal & external batteries, both offer decent water resistance ratings of IP54; protecting against sustained water splashes & dust ingress.

How long will the battery last for?
Typically, Lithium-ion based batteries offer an average lifespan of approx. 400-1000+ charge cycles before any faults arise. Relatively speaking, this takes approx. 2-3+ years of daily charging to reach this point. Alongside this, Segway’s 1 year warranty covers any faults within this time period, keeping you covered should anything occur.

Simply put, the design for this eScooter at the time was revolutionary, and we’ve seen many instances of competitors taking direct influence from this range. Features such as a curved anti-slip deck shape, centrally situated display, external batteries attached to the stem, etc.
As such, we found it no surprise to learn that the Ninebot ES4 even won the iF Design Award in 2018. To further attest to their confidence in quality control, Segway also offer a default 1 year warranty for all official purchases. Moving on to design features, we’re always happy to see a number of awesome additions on any ride.
However, Segway have delivered a great cost-effective electric scooter for commuters and casual riders, whilst still packed full of features. Although utilising a thumb throttle which can prove strenuous during long rides, cruise control counteracts this perfectly, allowing riders to relax.
Ergonomically speaking, the Ninebot ES4 offers a straightforward and comfortable ride. The LED display is centrally situated, showcasing mileage, battery life, diagnostics and more, all available at a brief glance. Integrated front, rear & deck lighting is another awesome and essential feature, giving freedom to ride at any hour; alongside customising your deck lighting and riding in style, all via the mobile app.

Build quality and ease of use
Bringing our Ninebot ES4 review onto build quality and ease of use. For starters, this model claims a stellar build quality, utilising a touch aluminium frame. As such, this model retains both strength and a light weight of 30.9 lbs (14 kg); capable of withstanding a beating without bending or warping. Both the internal & external batteries utilise Lithium-ion cells, which offer much greater capacity, faster charging and a longer lifespan.
Alongside this, all components are likely UL 2272 certified, as modern eScooters must adhere to strict fire & electrical safety standards. Coupled with an IP54 water-resistance rating, riders should have no issues with electrical faults, although we still recommend avoiding heavy exposure or submerging your scooter. Solid rubber tires offer great durability whilst also immune to any puncturing.
Whilst these solid rubber tires are a little more difficult to replace, they also last a lot longer than their air-filled counterparts. In terms of weight limit, the Ninebot ES4 supports weights of up to 220 lbs (100 kg), whilst weighing 30.9 lbs (14 kg) itself. This works out to just over 7 times its own weight, a fair amount considering how fair the price tag is. In terms of ease of use, mastering this model couldn’t be easier.
Riders can choose from the previously mentioned speed modes to match their skill level and help get their bearings. Thanks to Bluetooth & mobile support, users can effortlessly diagnose or customise their ride from the comfort of their phone. Cruise control is another fantastic feature, saving riders from straining their thumb or wrist on long journeys. All in all, we believe this model well worth the price & perfectly suited for both beginners and experts alike.

We believe that most, if not all of the Segway range remain suitable for roadside use, as they are clearly intended for use in urban/inner-city areas; predominantly due to the features offered and lack of off-road functionality.
An anti-slip rubber mat protects against accidental dismounting, with front & rear shock absorption soaking up bumps and potholes in the road, keeping the rider stable and in control. Briefly mentioning brakes, this model utilises both electric/manual braking, allowing for users to make sharp & sudden stops on demand.
To talk about tires, whilst air-filled pneumatic tires offer additional shock absorption, Segway’s decision to opt for solid rubber also works. There’s nothing worse than riding on the road and puncturing a tire, as it can also compromise rider control. These solid rubber tires offer increased durability and protects against the possibility of losing control from punctured tires.
Integrated & customisable front, rear & deck lighting are further featured, an important inclusion that allows for riding at any hour. We believe that when riding on the road, it’s important to stay seen & stay safe; so integrated lighting is always a great benefit. However, we still recommend wearing adequate safety gear, such as high-visibility clothing, a helmet, gloves, etc.
IP54 water resistance is also great to see, protecting components against dust ingress and sustained water pressure. As previously mentioned, all modern eScooters must adhere to a number of strict fire & electrical safety standards, and we believe this model no different.
