Welcome to our Segway Ninebot ES3 review for 2023. Originally releasing just over 2 years ago, it’s impressive how well this model has held up against modern competitors. In fact, this model was one of the first electric scooters with two batteries; greatly improving upon range and performance.
Without spoiling too much in this section, these batteries are lithium-ion, one of the best battery types available. This helps contribute to its above average performance regarding range and battery life. Segway were one of, if not the first company to pioneer the personal electric vehicle trend, originally releasing back in 2001. Since then they’ve expanded massively, operating world and with a huge team behind research & development.
With the original Segway design retired last July, they’ve moved on to their Ninebot electric scooter and hoverboard ranges; offering much cheaper, compact and accessible models to the public. Moving our 2023 Segway Ninebot ES3 review onto speed, power & distance. Bolstered by a 600W motor, this eScooter propels riders to speeds of up to 15.5 mp/h, similar to the rest of the models in this range. The motor also boasts a decent amount of torque, allowing riders to easily tackle inclines of up to 15 degrees. Whilst these current figures are pretty average, the 28 mile range is pretty impressive; much greater than what we usually see on similarly priced scooters.
This is obviously thanks to the dual Lithium-ion batteries, which we discuss in greater detail in our battery life & charging section. Technically, riders can carry multiple spare batteries, essentially doubling, tripling, etc. their range. We believe its light weight of 13.6 kg (30 lbs) also contributes to its decent range and acceleration, however please note that variables such as rider weight, terrain, incline, etc. will impact overall performance. Segway state that this eScooter best suits those aged 14+, between 3’11” and 6’6″. In terms of recommended weight, this model supports up to 220 lbs (100 kg), just over 7.3 times its own weight. Their team further states the minimum recommended weight for this model as 55 lbs (25 kg).
What is the range/distance?
28.0 miles (45 km), a great range for a mid-budget eScooter. Alongside this, riders can utilise the swappable external battery feature, effectively doubling/tripling, etc. their range.

Bringing our 2023 Segway Ninebot ES3 review onto battery life & charging; of which this model certainly exceeds. As previously mentioned, this eScooter was one of the first to incorporate dual batteries; contributing to an above average range compared to competitors. With 374 Wh internal & external Lithium-ion batteries, riders can conveniently charge their ride from nearly anywhere.
Although released a couple of years ago, we’ve seen very few competitors copy this, either due to budget or development issues. The fact that Segway were able to make this work whilst retaining a light weight of just 30 lbs is pretty impressive. Now, some may believe that double the battery means double the charge time, however the Ninebot ES3 also disproves this.
Riders can fully charge their empty eScooter in 7 hours, on par with most competitors. This is typically an average and unimpressive time, however this scooter does double the work; charging twice as much in the same amount of time. Alongside all this, the Ninebot ES3 also utilises a smart battery management system.
This SBMS protects against over-heating/current/charge, short circuiting and other common faults that put battery life at risk. This model contains both internal & external batteries, all IPX4 water resistant and likely UL 2272 certified. Alongside this, both batteries feature a Battery Management System; protecting against overheating, overcurrent and other common electrical faults.

The overall design of this model great, offering a wide and spacious deck that remains comfortable to stand and manoeuvre on. The centrally situated display clearly showcases speed and battery life, allowing riders to easily check their ride status as a brief glance.
Lightweight aluminium alloy is used to ensure durability whilst retaining a light weight of just 30 lbs (13.6 kg). We feel that Segway pushed forth a number of new design trends with this model, with even some modern competitors utilising the same shape and design choices.
Much like most electric scooters on the market, the ES3 remains fully folding. This allows for effortless transportation & storage wherever you are, greatly increasing its utility as an electric scooter for commuters. Riders can choose from 3 speed modes and match their mood or skill level; ranging from speed limit mode, standard mode and sport mode. Furthermore, riders can relax a little with cruise control, activated through the mobile app.
Through this mobile app, users can also customise their ride, or run diagnostics should any issues arise. Whilst a little extra rear suspension would be nice, this isn’t an issue provided you stick to flat & even surfaces. All in all, a very solid design & comfortable ride, packed full of features and great performance for the price!

Build quality and ease of use
Bringing our 2023 Segway Ninebot ES3 review onto build quality & ease of use. With a frame forged from aluminium alloy, it’s no surprise that this model can withstand a number of harsh hits and slams without denting or warping.
This durability is also accompanied by an impressively light weight of just 30 lbs, contributing to its overall effectiveness as a low-cost electric scooter for commuting. This also attests to Segway’s use of high quality components and emphasis on quality control, going as far as to offer 1 year warranty on all official purchases.
Everything is tightly screwed on, with no clanking or clattering of loose parts when shaking this model around. 8″ (front) and 7.5″ (rear) solid rubber tires result in great grip and eliminates any risk of puncturing. However, some may prefer air-filled tires, as they are cheaper to replace and offer some additional shock absorption. Even two years down the line, it seems that many competitors use the same design choices as Segway’s Ninebot range, true trendsetters!
In terms of ease of use, it really couldn’t get much easier to mount, ride or dismount this model. As previously mentioned, the display is centrally situated and allows for riders to quickly & easily check their mileage, battery life, speed and more. Using the mobile app, riders can also set up cruise control for longer journeys, another positive for its potential role as an electric scooter for commuters.
Three speed modes allow riders to match their skill level or mood, ranging from speed limit, normal and sport modes. The frame remains fully folding, allowing for easy transport and storage, another bonus for commuters and casual riders alike. Safety and usability on the road
Switching to the most important section of our 2023 Segway Ninebot ES3 review; safety and usability on the road. This is a key concern for any aware rider, as personal safety remains paramount at all times, especially when riding on the road.
Anti-slip rubber is used throughout the deck/standing area, allowing for much greater grip and preventing against slipping. Riders can quickly reach the brakes, thanks to the inclusion of both mechanical and electrical braking. Front shock absorption soaks up some minor potholes, although we don’t recommend putting this to the test.
Whilst intended as a roadside/urban electric scooter, it’s clear that this model best suits smooth and even surfaces. Whilst the IPX4 water resistance could be a little better, it’s still a decent level of protection against dust & water ingress. However, the most significant is the inclusion of a bright LED headlight, allowing riders to see and stay seen at all hours.
This is especially important when riding on the roads with offer traffic. Coupled with side & rear reflector strips, we feel like it’s almost hard to be missed when riding one of these. Although a great addition, we still recommend riders wear adequate safety gear, such as high-visibility clothing, helmet, gloves, etc.
